How to Know You Are On the Right Track, Career-Wise

And what to do if you're off track
Touching 3 pillows simultaneously, might be a record (lol)

Greetings beautiful souls and welcome back! ⭐ And welcome to our new subscribers!!

Here are my latest offerings:

Growth can be painful and lonely. These tools and services are made to help you!

I received a question from one of my dear friends and beloved readers about how to know if you’re on the right track in your career. And while this dear friend is already feeling better about where she is at, I still figured it’s a good topic for the group.

The last few years we’ve seen extraordinary amounts of burnout and career pivots. I was one of them. I quit my job in clinical pharmacy in 2022 (almost exactly 2 years ago to this day!) and decided to go all-in on full-time rest, followed by blogging, then eventually adding on dog sitting, coaching, and energy healing. And wedding officiating! As of late 🙂

And while most of us were trained to run these questions of whether we are on the right track through the mind - I’ll invite us to try another way - through our feelings.

Using Your Feelings as a Guide

The reason the mind is not a great place to find your answers is because it’s an endless loop of chatter and more questions. It’s never really satisfied. The mind is a great tool to serve our hearts, but not really to be the leader of our decision-making.

We do, however, all have a built-in internal guidance system, aka our feelings. Our feelings are messages from the soul, letting us know what’s going on underneath.  Our feelings can tell us if something is still in alignment or not. And our energy levels can tell us whether we feel energized by something or drained by it.

If you take a second to tune inwards about what you are doing (or the multiple tasks you are in charge of in your work), using your feelings, you can quickly see how satisfied you are (or not) doing that thing.

Using Joy As Your Compass

Most of us were conditioned out of feeling joy as young people, but joy is our true nature. Ever since I left healthcare, I’ve tried to make joy my priority. If I absolutely love what I am doing, even it’s seemingly unrelated to my work, like coloring 😂 I’m still gonna do it.

Because the law of attraction states I am in a prime position to receive more of that vibration, including intuitive ideas to cultivate even more joy in new and fresh ways. Your intuition becomes available to you when you’re in a receiving state like joy, gratitude, or relaxation.

And these openings and intuitive hits bring new ideas, next steps, new tasks, projects, and so much more that will expand on your joy.  Doing things out of a sense of joy is always for the greatest and highest good, meaning everyone, including you, will benefit. It will energize you in such a positive way.

Doing things out of duty, because you feel you have to or “should”, won’t garner the same results and will likely leave you exhausted and burned out. It’s not as powerful. See my post on aligned doing vs. dutiful doing.

Aligned Doing vs. Dutiful Doing

Greetings spiritualists and welcome back! 🙂

The reason joy is such a good measuring stick for your life is because joy is inherently connected to purpose. So if you are looking for your life’s purpose, it will be hidden in the things you enjoy. And having purpose and meaning in your life, well, it rocks!

Exploring the Not-Self

I’m reading this book currently: Human Design for Business by Jamie Palmer. Great read btw! If you don’t know your Human Design, look it up here. Human Design is basically a blueprint for your most de-conditioned, soulful, and authentic life. It is unique to you. Using your birthdate, time, and location (as well as information from other self-discovery tools like astrology, I-ching, and a few other things, etc.) you can get an idea of who you really are at your core and how you operate best using your unique energy.

The Not-Self theme in Human Design means exactly what it sounds like - you are not operating from your Highest, most authentic self. Your feelings will tell if this is the case. For projectors - you tend to feel bitterness and resentment when you are not operating in your truest form. For manifestors - you tend to feel anger and loss when you are not operating in your truest form. For generators and manifesting generators - you all tend to feel frustration when you are not operating in your truest form. For reflectors - you all tend to feel disappointment when you are not operating from your Highest Self.

When you are not operating in a way that uses your unique energy in ways that are beneficial to you, or if you are not able to share your natural gifts and be honored for them, you’re likely going to feel like your not-self, and you’re very likely going to burn out over it at some point.

A Caveat

Life has its ups and downs, as well as its cycles. So for example, no matter if we have a 9-5, an entrepreneurial job, or something else, we all go through periods of growth and then periods of plateau. This is all part of the journey.

As a manifesting generator, when I go through periods of stagnation in my work, I feel frustrated, but that is not necessarily a sign that I’m on the wrong track. It just means I’m in a specific phase of a cycle where a personal growth spurt lays ahead.

Every time I feel frustrated that I’m not growing my business enough, or that I don’t even know if my blog matters to people (lol), as soon as I clear the frustration and come back into peace, I usually have a couple of friends, within days, reaching out to me telling me that they enjoy my blog and it’s helping them 🙂 thank you, dear friends!!! 😘😘

The main thing is, if you are able to continue doing your work and still feel lit up about it in some way, even despite some frustrating bumps in the road, you’re probably on the right track.

In contrast, if continuing the work only continues to bum you out, then you’re probably not on the right track.

For example, when I worked in healthcare, my frustration became so high, and seemed to only get higher, which inevitably led to a severe burnout. In fact, no matter how much I offloaded or took vacation, or even tried to find joy, I couldn’t recover from burnout while in the job. It didn’t matter if I saw one patient that day or ten.

That was a sign I was not working in congruence with my Human Design.

Take Stock

The best way to know if something is right or wrong for you is by taking stock. For every project, task, meeting, assignment, or even calls (if you work with clients or patients) that you do, rate from 0-10 how much joy you feel about it.

And it might surprise you, what you see. If you’re not getting at least a 7 out of what you’re doing,(although I’d argue if it’s not a 10, why bother?) it might be time to evaluate if there is some way you can bring more joy (or mindfulness) to that task, or if perhaps it is time to offload or delegate to somebody else. Or if it’s time for a big change!

I’m sure many of us in the group are workaholic, overachiever types - it’s okay to give yourself permission to focus on the few tasks that do light you up and honor your gifts and energy, and then let go of the rest. Less can be more! 😀

My Recommendations

I never recommend leaving a job or situation on a low note. Don’t leave out of anger, frustration, or even burnout. Don’t leave because your boss is a micromanager. Inside all of these hardships is a spiritual gift waiting to be unwrapped. If you leave on a low note, you’re going to recreate the same hard situation in the next place. If you don’t make peace with your micromanager boss, guess what - another will appear someway, somehow in your field. That’s according to the law of attraction.

I always, always recommend finding as much joy and gratitude in the job you have, even if you hate it, and really, really making peace with all of it. Because in some ways it has served you, paid you, and grown you into who you are today. When you leave on that high note, it creates a wonderful ripple effect for you to be remembered by, and it brings you blessings into your next phase of life.

The last post I published before I quit my job was gratitude. And here is my post on why I quit my job.

Rewrite Your Present

If you’ve taken stock and you’re not totally happy where you are at, before jumping ship, I invite you to write out what you really want. How do you want to feel when you are working? What are the feelings? Freedom? Flexibility? Abundance? Joy? Purpose? Love? Connection?

Who do you want to work with? What types of people are they? How do they treat you? What about your salary? And then see if your present starts to match that vision. Sometimes things shift and fall into place where you are, and sometimes it truly is time to jump ship.

For me, being able to listen to my body, versus working a 40-hour schedule, really mattered. I’ve learned I can only work in 1-2 hour spurts, and that is according to my Human Design.

Your Future

Your feelings are the most reliable source of whether you’re on the right track. Life cycles and loops, so maybe you are where you’re supposed to be now, and maybe that will change in the future.

Gone are the days of staying in one position forever. We’re meant to change, grow, and evolve. And if we’re lucky (and intentional), we find things to do that honor our purpose and energy and uplift all those around us.

But your feelings will tell you if you’re on the right track. The mind can never give you that. So whenever you are unsure, drop into meditation, or drop into the body or heart, and give yourself a little check-in. Your body is supremely intelligent and will let you know. The answers are already inside of you.

Pep Talk

You are worthy of doing work that lights you up. In fact, the world prospers and becomes more balanced when you go for it. Even if there are times of stagnation, delays, or things going slower than you imagined, embrace it and learn from it and be grateful for it! It’s ultimately growing you into your next level. There’s a windfall of possibilities and abundance on the other side 🙂

“If you are walking the path, the universe is walking the path with you. Often, things will just work out perfectly with little effort. It’s like the universe is continuously reorganizing the world you live in so as to send the right people to you at the right time. All we have to do is be set on the path and open enough to receive these gifts.”~ Michael Hetherington
