Greetings beautiful souls and welcome back! ⭐
Today’s post is about how to know it’s time to follow your calling. Btw - I’ve been posting videos to Instagram and written posts to Facebook on following your purpose - follow me if you’d like!
I recently finished reading a book called Callings by Gregg Levoy. It might be my favorite book of all time. And if you know me, you know I read about 60 books a year, so that’s saying something. It’s beautifully written and captures the essence of what it means to have and follow a calling.
I know what this feeling is. During the pandemic, I felt an ache inside of me, I was burning out at work, and feeling so frustrated and unsatisfied on the inside. This was new for me, as I was always someone who loved my work.
I had to break down to break through not only to figure out my purpose, but to express it, and to eventually leave that job.
And even doing that was scary as hell. I’ve built a lot of things along the way. But I’m still figuring things out as I go. And yet here I am, still doing it. So yeah.
This Post Is For You If:
You know what your calling is and are questioning if it’s time to follow your calling
You’re feeling stuck, confused, or stagnant because you know your calling is calling you and you haven’t quite pursued it yet
You’ve tried talking to friends or journaling about it, but haven’t figured out why you feel different
You’re tired of knowing something is changing, but are not sure as to when it would be right time to go
You’re ready to see if now or sometime in the near future is a good time to follow your calling
Why Should You Learn About Following a Calling?
Callings come in all kinds of shapes and forms. They’re not even necessarily limited to work. They could be to move locations, enter a relationship, have a baby, or get a pet. And beyond!
Learning to follow a calling is like getting a PhD in being a human. Callings often mean you are changing into a new version of you, which not everybody can handle. Some people choose to cling to old ways of being, at the cost of their own soul satisfaction, personal growth, and well-being.
Not following callings leads to a lot of regret, health consequences, and general dissatisfaction. Do you want to be that person?
What Is Following a Calling?
Following a calling is listening to the whispers of your soul, and taking action, at the right divine timing. As we learn and grow, our souls call us to the next level of personhood where we invite even more of the soul to come in. Sometimes when things are really comfortable, that’s when you get a call to start shifting into a newer version of you.
Callings often start as quiet whispers, and eventually get louder with time. Sometimes it’s an initial feeling or ache, like something is not quite right. And then eventually it becomes a bigger signal like the feelings of dissatisfaction, frustration, bitterness, a deep yearning, or something else.
If you choose to ignore your calling, the calls get even louder and louder and things become more chaotic. This could lead to a burnout, an illness, a breakup, a job loss, a death, etc. Life will get your attention!!!
But the actual following of the calling is the kicker, because that signifies you are ready to step into a new way of being, even if it means letting go of old structures. Some structures within you need to crumble before you can make space for the new thing. That could mean old relationships, jobs, routines, belief systems, patterns of behavior, and even locations in order to get to the next level.
Big dreams require big investments, be it time, money, energy, schooling, healing, or something else. That’s the essence of following a calling. In learning to follow a calling, you realize that you will do whatever it takes to make that dream happen, even if it means being uncomfortable for a while.
How to Know When It’s Time to Follow Your Calling
I’m gonna walk you through step-by-step how to know it’s time to follow your calling.
Recognize the Signs: The universe is constantly communicating with us. When we pay attention to the signs, we can see if we are getting universal encouragement to go ahead, or if we really need to stay put for a while. Examples of signs include: animals, repeating numbers, bumper sticker messages, billboard messages, something you hear from a podcast or read in a book. It could be from your tarot readings or your dreams, too. Recognizing the signs means tuning into whether that thing means something to you and seeing if it’s a message to move forward.
Tune Into Your Feelings: If your calling is a big one (which most of them are), you might feel a bit conflicted. Part of you might feel relieved, expanded, and even peaceful about following your calling, but part of you might feel super scared and anxious about it. Make sure to settle your feelings first. Most of us don’t make great decisions in the highest of highs or the lowest of lows. Don’t rush this part, take your time, and really make sure.
Tune Into Your Intuition: Your intuition sits beneath your high and low feelings. It contains the keys to unlocking your life, step-by-step. Tuning into your intuition means checking in, wherever you get it (through your gut, your heart, talking it out loud, or journaling - I have a course on intuition - message me if you want to learn more) to make sure that this is truly the right time to really pursue that calling. The real test is if you consistently get a “yes” from your intuition. You might even feel a “blessing” type of energy surround you when it really is time to go.
Follow Your Calling! All that’s left, when you feel really sure, is to go. Waiting will no longer cut it. Waiting will make you feel like you’re dying, so might as well take the leap.
When I knew it was time to quit my job, the day before I was supposed to tell my boss, I felt a peaceful, calming, magical energy wash over me while I was doing my work. It was like intuitively I knew I was being supported in this decision and that everything would end up okay. That’s how I really, really knew it was time to go.
But I had also been thinking about quitting my job for a while, and wanted to make sure I wasn’t leaving on a bad note (I write about this in my book: It Can Be Done: Learn to Create Meaningful Work You Love).
What If You Honor the Timing of Following Your Calling?
As disruptive as callings are (lol), you’ll feel peaceful knowing you are taking the right actions at the right time, even if it scares you. Even if it means rebuilding yourself into a new person.
Not following a calling can lead to a life of regret, health consequences, or worse, general dissatisfaction and discontent about your life. Nobody wants to sit on their death bed and wish they had followed their dreams.
If you honor your calling, it will eventually honor you back… ⭐
