Self-Care, Self-Love, Self-Worth

Greetings humans and welcome back!!!
Today we’re gonna talk about self-care, self-love, and self-worth. I think these concepts are easily confused and sometimes used interchangeably, though it depends on your definitions. There’s no right or wrong here, and I will say this topic was inspired by the book Hurt, Healing, Healed by Emma Mumford (great book btw!!).
Self-Care
Self-care, according to Mumford, is the practice of doing something to embody self-love. These are the things we actively engage in on a physical level (or externally) to take care of ourselves and show ourselves love.
Some examples include: starting or maintaining a meditation practice, journaling, making gratitude lists, cooking, moving your body in healthy and sustainable ways, eating nourishing foods, or filling your cup with content or information that lights you up.
That can include reading spiritual books, or listening to your favorite podcasts. Doing something for yourself that gives you great joy.
It can even include social engagements - taking yourself out on dates, or making plans with people who fill up your proverbial cup. I know I definitely have friends that I love having spiritual conversations with. That’s a form of self-care, too.
To me, self-care is always about carving out the time so that you can connect with yourself, fulfill your own needs, and refresh your energy. For best results, practice daily or often.
Self-Love
Self-love is about the relationship that we have with ourselves. How do we treat ourselves day-to-day? Or, when we make a mistake or are messy in our lives? Are we judging ourselves, shoving those parts away (ie., shadows), or are we kind and compassionate with ourselves?
“Oh well, I still love myself anyways”. Or “I have compassion for myself through this tough time.”“I can be messy, but I still have love for myself.”
What do you think when you look in the mirror? Do you express love and gratitude towards yourself? Or are you nitpicking at your looks, your hair, your body, or something else?
Self-love is about affirming the truth of your vast and authentic nature! Per my own definition, it’s about setting and maintaining healthy boundaries (and newly adjusting them as needed!), forgiving yourself, trusting yourself, believing in yourself. Also holding space for yourself when you are triggered, and practicing self-compassion and self-acceptance.
These things become much easier when you spend time doing your inner work to heal the parts of yourself that block these things.
It’s also about telling yourself that you love yourself. So here are some affirmations to help you to do this!
I love and appreciate myself
I am a glorious child of the universe, therefore I am loved, lovable, and loving
My divine nature is a gift to this world
I love and appreciate my body
I am worthy of my own self-love
I love and honor myself
I am worthy of love and respect
Self-Worth
According to Mumford, self-worth is the embodiment of self-love and self-care. Self-worth is the basis in which you operate your life.
Self-worth is tricky, because we know on an intellectual level that our true divine nature is limitless, powerful, creative, and vast. But true self-worth is about knowing this on a deeper, cellular level and practicing this throughout each and every day.
True self-worth is unchanging. It’s always there, and it never leaves. It just gets covered up by conditioning and stuff.
Because of this, we are apt to lose touch with our true self-worth. But as we learn to release the layers of hurt, we can remember our true nature and potential and embody that. That’s self-worth.
Self-worth is knowing you are worthy of all your dreams and more. It’s remembering how powerful you really are.
It’s about saying no to the things that do not resonate or align, and yes to the things that do. It’s about moving away from self-abandonment and people-pleasing into self-empowerment and true authenticity.
Gabrielle Bernstein (spiritual author, teacher, podcaster) likes to affirm, “I raise my self-worth to raise my net worth.” And I agree with her. After quitting work last year, I had to really get over my own guilt and shyness with charging for things. Because we all deserve to carry out our life purposes and be paid generously for our gifts and services!! In whatever way that looks like 🙂
Self-worth is also the barometer we use to assess our lives and determine whether the treatment we are receiving, in any situation, is up to snuff. Are we being seen, respected, and adored in work, romance, friendship, and family?
Self-worth helps you to decide whether something is worth working through, or if it’s time to move on. Nothing wrong with saying my self-worth has increased, and I’m open to welcoming in new things to match this.
Because you are worthy of being seen, respected, and adored on ALL LEVELS.
The way to get to true self-worth though, is to release limiting beliefs!!! And learn to believe better. Which is why I am coming out with an e-book on this 🙂 *date TBD*
