The 12 Steps to the Hero's Journey

Greetings spiritualists and welcome back! 🙂
Today we’re going to talk about the 12 steps to the hero’s journey. I learned about this in my spiritual life coaching certification program 🙂
Any person can be a hero. And anytime you bring an idea into the world, or take a new journey, you pass through 12 steps. The steps can each take days, months, or years. All of the steps live within the essential nature of all things.
All of these can be applied to career, personal changes, or even relationships.
Let’s go through them!
Step 1: The Ordinary World
The Ordinary World is a place where many of us start out. This is the world of doing things on autopilot, without a good reason or purpose for anything. You may feel stuck, bored, or in a comfort zone. You may feel that there is more to life than this. Or that you are in limbo or in a waiting room.
This is how I felt back in 2020 during the pandemic, working in healthcare.
Step 2: The Call to Adventure
This is the stage where change is definitely needed. You might be receiving requests or synchronicities for change, or are feeling bombarded with ideas.
Examples would include feeling sick and tired of your job, or receiving an email from a business with a call to action to improve your life.
Step 3: The Refusal of the Call
At this stage, you might freak out or feel uncomfortable with the idea of change. You might make excuses not to take the call to adventure.
When you refuse the call, something dies within you.
Step 4: Meeting the Mentor
You then meet someone who gives you the tools or the motivation to change. The stakes are high and you will suffer if you don’t take action.
Your mentor can be anybody - a friend, a therapist, a spiritual teacher, a book
The mentor for me was this book: Discover Your Dharma by Sahara Rose
Step 5: Crossing the Threshold
You are now experimenting with change - taking a step to move forward. This might be starting a new course, or having a sense of adventure and joy. Sometimes this is a physical move, other times more energetic. This is the threshold from the ordinary world to the magical world.
An example of this would be starting a meditation practice, where you are crossing over from the ordinary world to a different realm of presence and power.
For me, I believe starting to blog was me crossing the threshold.
Step 6: Tests, Allies, and Enemies
Here you discover new ways of being. You meet new allies, friends, and enemies. But the enemies are really a reflection of your shadow. And while the enemy can feel like an enemy, they are in actuality a gift to help you grow.
In movies the example would be the hero goes to a bar, meets people, gets into a fight, and comes out on the other side.
For me, I believe my parents were my first enemy. They were really scared I’d fail after quitting pharmacy.
Step 7: The Innermost Cave
This is where you go within to get your powers ready. You are mastering your gift/material and going deep.
Examples: getting ready for a speech, presentation, course, or workshop. Even healing your biggest fears.
Step 8: The Ordeal
This step can be prolonged and can happen multiple times. The stakes are high at this stage. You have something planned but something goes wrong. Are you willing to face failure in the face? Your job is to work out what’s not working so that you can reform it into what works.
Examples: you want to release a course/workshop, but the launch doesn’t work out. You start your new business, but the website has kinks.
I feel like I’m here!!!
Step 9: The Reward
You’ve cracked the codes of step 8, and now you are reaping the rewards. This could be skills, a spiritual feeling, financial blessings, health, or that your project is up and running. You’re helping a lot of people at this stage and it’s going really well!
Example: your book hits #1 and you go off to enjoy yourself.
But you can’t enjoy it for too long because your journey is not over yet…
Step 10: The Road Back
It’s time to return home with the power. The project you’ve started is helping more people and you are making improvements to the project. All the wisdom (embodied knowledge) you’ve experienced applies to you now. This is where the hero is in a more grounded place, sharing at a bigger level.
This is the step in the movies where the hero is being chased, because seizing the reward (sword) is usually in the enemy’s kingdom (shadows).
Examples: your book is sustaining on the bestseller’s list, or now you are sustaining your meditation practice
Step 11: The Resurrection
You need to clear or purify yourself first before you go back home. You are clearing all the traces of battle, as well as your ego. This is the climax of the journey - there’s a bunch of challenges, so much so that you might want to give up completely.
You are becoming massively humbled and purified and making sure you’ve learned the lesson.
Example: you go from financial poverty to financial wealth - and see how humble you are!
Step 12: Return with the Elixir
You finally get to come home! You’ve changed as the things that have trapped you are no longer there. You have new values, new acquisitions, new skills, new excitements. You’ve been reborn completely.
Once you’ve passed through all 12 steps, you become a healer. You’ve brought back a special gift. Now that you’re back in the ordinary world, you feel the itch… and then you’re off again.
Then starts the journey again at step 1!
What I loved about this is… It’s nice to know that there are different stages to any journey, and while you may be caught up in a single stage, all of this is part of a bigger plan that’s for your greatest and highest good.
It’s normal to not always be where you wanna be, but good things take time.
So I’d love to know… what step are you at in your journey?
Thanks for reading and sending you lots of love!

“The hero always undergoes a metamorphosis, from ordinary to extraordinary. The hero, like the snake, sheds its old skin and takes on a new form. To change, you must enter a sacred space, a transformational space. Nothing ever changes in the ordinary space.” ~ David Sinclair
