Problem Consciousness vs. Solution Consciousness
Greetings everyone and welcome back! 🙂
Today we’re going to talk about problem consciousness vs. solution consciousness. I find this is an ever-pervasive topic that can help formulate how we think about the world.
It is no secret that we’ve become aware of lots of inequities, social disadvantages, and other horrors. But before we focus on how everything is the worst, let’s talk about the difference between problem consciousness and solution consciousness.
What is Consciousness?
Consciousness is the level of awareness we have surrounding our thoughts, sensations, and feelings. Every thought and emotion carries a vibration, and every vibration carries an attraction point. Lower levels of consciousness will attract that which matches that vibration, and same with higher levels of consciousness.
Problem Consciousness
The lowest levels of consciousness are problem-related consciousness. For example, greed, exploitation, lack, scarcity, and superiority (such as what the patriarchy was born out of). We’ve seen how this played out, and how it has infected every industry in the US.
However, the way we respond to problem consciousness is at the very heart of solution consciousness. If we are blaming, shaming, judging, criticizing, we are still in a negative vibration (as righteous as it feels!) and therefore we are not part of the solution.
An Example of Problem Consciousness
Recently, in Nashville (the city I live), there was a shooting at a covenant school.
The shooter must have sustained much pain in their life, enough for them to think that harming others is a viable thing to do.
Sadly, trauma colors the lens in which we perceive the world. And in many institutions, like schools and places of worship, trauma is perpetuated there by means of control.
If you don’t conform to the values and behaviors of the school or place of worship, you are seen as someone that needs “fixing” and are usually punished someway somehow. This leads to more rejection of self, which translates to emotional pain and, if unchecked, eventually wanting to harm others.
Trauma is an invisible epidemic (and for those of you who are interested, read this book Trauma: The Invisible Epidemic). Which means, if we don’t heal our trauma, it gets passed on laterally (within generations) and vertically (down the line). The same dysfunction over and over again.
Gun Control Doesn’t Treat the Underlying Cause
With gun control, we’re taking a really simple solution and trying to apply it to a complex and layered situation.
Since the problem was born out of control consciousness, then the solution of more control is just perpetuating the same problem.
We already have too much control in every system imaginable. Plus, if you remove something that people think they want, or make it harder to obtain, they will find other ways to obtain it. Illegally! Then think about the unintended consequences from that.
Plus, it doesn’t treat the underlying cause.
Solution Consciousness
What we need is a shift in consciousness, collectively. We need to treat underlying causes.
Higher level consciousness is that of love, unity, compassion, forgiveness, and gratitude. We realize this behavior is a symptom of something underneath (usually unexpressed and unhealed emotional pain and trauma). And we realize that the best way to move forward is through healing.
Without getting up out of your seat, here are ways you can energetically contribute to a solution:
Send loving-kindness to the shooter. Yes, you can do this. Loving-kindness is a meditation with roots from the Buddhist meditation practice, metta. By sending loving-kindness to someone (even if they are gone), you are opening your heart to and supporting this person to find their healing and their own peace. You can use the following script below, or you can adjust to fit your own words.
May they have loving-kindness
May they have compassion
May they have peace
May they be at ease
Send loving-kindness to the people who were directly affected. This includes the lives that were lost, and the people who are directly related to their lost loved ones.
Send loving-kindness to people who were indirectly affected. By doing this, you start to realize that everyone in the world is connected, because we are all part of the same interconnected, energetic matrix. Which means that when one person suffers, so do the rest of us. Equally, when one of us heals, so do the rest of us. This is unity consciousness.
(Truly, you can do this in a different order, the above is just a suggestion!)
Unity consciousness helps us manifest viable and lasting solutions, for the greatest and highest good.
Without Presence, We Cannot Heal
Presence increases awareness. Presence allows the thoughts and feelings that afflict us to be known. Presence gives us a pause so that we can process what is going on underneath. We can’t create change without awareness first.
But if we want to keep controlling things, without looking at underlying causes, we will never get anywhere as a society. We have to learn to heal, and implement better structures where people can be supported in their own healing.
Healing means we accept who we are and what we have gone through. And healing means we can find it in our hearts to forgive others who have strayed so far away from their inherent goodness, with compassion (not judgment).
We are all born with inherent goodness. Not one person is given any more or less.
So I ask you, are you ready to be part of solution consciousness?
Have a peaceful and abundant week!
Love,
Angeli
