Greetings meaning seekers! ⭐
Today’s post is for the people in the group who don’t like their jobs, or are thinking about changing careers. Maybe you don’t know what your next steps are, but you’re feeling an ache inside, like you’re meant for something more… and you’re right.
This Post Is For You If:
You’ve noticed you are feeling an ache inside, like something isn’t quite right in your career
You’re feeling bored, anxious, confused, or complacent in your current work role
You’ve tried talking about it to your partners and friends, but they don’t understand
You’re tired of not knowing what your next steps are in your career (should I stay or should I go?)
You’re willing to learn something new and walk the path of authenticity and soul
If you’re feeling bored, anxious, complacent, or just like you haven’t reached your full potential in your career, life is calling your attention to these feelings for a reason. In my book, It Can Be Done: Learn to Create Meaningful Work You Love, I talk about the “old paradigm” way of choosing jobs. We chose based on what our culture, parenting, schooling, and conditioning taught us was the right job to pick, usually for external reasons, like good pay, benefits, solid hours, and a 401K.
We molded ourselves to the job description, or we thought, “I could make this work for a while.” Notice the lingo - “make this work” - versus “it fits”. Meanwhile, your soul is starving for nourishing work.
It’s easy to think, “Well I’ll just apply for new jobs.” Without doing the inner work of figuring out what your soul wants, (and healing your current belief system), you’ll either recreate the same situation as before (boredom mixed with complacency, or worse, extreme busy-ness), or you’ll find yourself getting job rejection after job rejection, because the “market is bad”.
So what to do then?
Hmmm… the old ways don’t work anymore, and new opportunities aren’t opening up… maybe it’s time to try something new. By taking the time to tune inwards, figuring out what your gifts are, what your purpose is, and how you can express it, you might gain clarity and feel happy, alive, and free on the inside. Even if you don’t change jobs… yet.
We mistakenly think if we change the outside thing, the inside will change. We also think we have to do something drastic to in order change our circumstances. And that’s simply not true.
Spending time tuning inwards is often enough, until it is time to act. Choosing a new way to be takes time, thought, and healing. When you choose to figure out your soul’s purpose (the big reason why you are here) and how to express your gifts… when you heal your limiting beliefs about what’s possible - you have to be a different person in order to gain a new outcome.
Maybe you create a new role within your current work place. Or a new opportunity at another workplace opens up. Maybe you create something on the side to bridge you to the next thing. Or, if you’re like me, you just don’t line anything else up because you need rest and plan to become an entrepreneur!
Continuing to look externally to solve your problem isn’t going to assist you, because those old ways aren’t sustainable. Life is calling you to embrace a new way. A new way means factoring in your soul into all of your decisions, so that you can feel lighter and more authentic to you. Most workplaces don’t care about your authenticity. They care about a bottom line or external metric. They see you as a machine.
But your soul cares about you, your body, and your well-being. I care about you. And I want you to know that even walking the path of “I don’t like this” and acknowledging those feelings is a really brave thing to do. For months and months, I would pretend I was happy in my work, because I knew to anticipate the question of “What would you do instead?” and I had no answer.
But the answers do come, eventually. It takes patience, healing, and raising your vibration to get there. And it doesn’t all come at once. You won’t have another 10-year plan after this. You’ll have a one-step plan. Then some time will pass. Then the next-step plan. And you keep following the route, until you actually get somewhere. And even still, you’re learning along the way, living in the present moment, surrendered to the highest good.
Life isn’t about making it to 65 years old to maybe reap some retirement benefits that quite honestly get skimpier and skimpier by the minute. Especially for millennials and younger. Do you know for a fact that you’ll live to 65?
So I guess what I’m trying to say is, honor where you are right now. Feel your feelings. Express them. Heal and grow. Be open to what is new. Be kind to yourself. Love yourself through this, because it’s going to challenge the fuck out of you. On the one hand, you could stay the same, but that’s going to ache and ache worse and quite possibly affect your health and other aspects of your life. On the other, you could face your fears and create something amazing.
And it’s worth facing. On the other side is a vibrant, peaceful, loving, and grateful version of you who was glad you did what you did.
Wherever you are, know that there is a divine plan that is calling your name.
