Today we are talking about creating abundance using the 8 phases of the lunar cycle. This is inspired by Ezzie Spencer’s book, Lunar Abundance.
Many of you know my backstory - I worked as a clinical pharmacist for the VA (Veteran’s Affairs) for 5 years. I burned out really badly during the pandemic and quit my job in 2022. It took me over a year to recover from burnout, and my body is just not the same since.
Another little backstory: I learned about the phases of the moon when I was 8 years old, living in England. As I would look up at the night sky and see the moon, I’d say, “the moooooon!!!” and my brothers would make fun of me. That’s how much I loved the moon and still do today!!!! She’s a breathtaking beauty.
Why Is Knowing About the Moon Phases Important?
The moon can be used for guidance on how to plan and anticipate your days while honoring and allowing for ample rest, going inwards, and taking advantage of your more productive days, according to the lunar cycle!
Let’s first clarify what abundance is: abundance can be related to money, but it can also be related to more rest, more energy, a greater sense of well-being. Can also be more fulfillment and satisfaction, love, and gratitude. Abundance is equal parts being and doing, trusting and flowing.
How to Create Abundance During the Lunar Cycles? There are certain days of the cycle that are yin energy (feminine energy, being, receiving), and certain days of yang energy (masculine energy, doing, acting). When we are aware of what phase we are in, we can make the most of that energy and use it to our advantage.
Let’s Get into the Phases
Phase 1: New Moon (Doing)
The new moon is the darkest point in the sky. It is the time to go inwards and feel. Many of us learned to dissociate from our physical sensations and feelings as a byproduct of our conditioning. The new moon reminds us that without light in the sky, it’s time to get quiet and feel.
This is also a great time to set your intentions for the current lunar cycle and feel it becoming real in your body. The new moon is a yang phase (a cycle of doing) centered around setting intentions and then feeling them.
PS - this next new moon on April 8th is also a solar eclipse! Eclipses shake things up and really push us to grow. Here in Nashville, the solar eclipse is partial and visible around 2pm. Make sure you wear the right glasses or make the right pinhole contraption so that you can safely see it without burning your eyes!
Phase 2: Crescent Moon (Being)
The Crescent Moon is the new moon’s yin counterpart. After setting intentions in the New Moon Phase, the Crescent Moon phase is a time to rest and restore. This doesn’t necessarily mean you just do nothing for 4 days (lol), but relative to the yang of the New Moon, you are letting your intentions percolate and permeate your energy field.
This yin phase will be about being, receiving, listening, and restoring.
Phase 3: First Quarter Moon (Doing)
The first quarter moon is a half-moon, but is a quarter of the way around its revolution of the Earth (that’s how it got its name). In this phase, we illuminate our actions, based on the intentions we set at the New Moon. So, your doing is in alignment with your soul’s intentions, versus doing for the sake of being busy. After a restful crescent moon phase, this is the time our doing can feel energized and aligned!
When we talk about actions, less-effective yang can be achievement-oriented, randomly busy, overly intellectualized, pushy or dominant.
Effective yang looks like: purpose-driven, focused direction, from both the head and the heart, assertive and respectful.
When we remember to use discernment, and reference back to our New Moon intentions, we can choose powerful action that is meaningful and helps us reach our true heart’s goals. In this way, we are working smarter and not harder!!
Phase 4: Gibbous Moon (Being)
Back to being again! This phase is about trust. The moon is almost at its peak, but not quite. When we slow down to trust, it demands our presence, operating outside the norms of constant doing and busy-ness. We learn to trust the natural ebbs and flows of life.
A perfect way to incorporate this phase of being into your life is to notice the temptation to learn forward and keep pushing to get things done. I’ll tell you from personal experience that was my mode for so long. Eventually my body gave out.
A yin phase such as this one invites us to witness ourselves, see what it’s like to not push for a change, and not beat yourself up about it!! Remember, a yang phase is just around the corner!
Less effective yin: controls, feels helpless and overwhelmed, too timid to speak, and reciprocates when receiving unconsciously
More effective yin: allows uncertainty, nurtures the self and others as needed, listens and collaborates, and accepts (receives) with discernment and boundaries
Phase 5: Full Moon (Doing)
After a restful yin phase, it’s time to take aligned action again. The intentions that we set two weeks ago at the New Moon phase have now become clearer in terms of our action.
If, however, we got off track from our intentions, or, if those intentions were not truly in alignment, now it’s time to course-correct. The path is now lit. While the Full Moon can be a time of high feelings and emotions, it’s also a time to learn how to hold those emotions while still being functional.
Letting go is also a big part of this phase. This can look like decluttering, releasing old stories or limiting beliefs, as well as outdated relationships. When we release what’s old, we make space for what’s new, in accordance with our New Moon intentions. Then we take aligned action to support our intentions, now free from these limiting pasts.
Phase 6: Disseminating Moon (Being)
We are back to a yin phase, and receiving is a big part of this phase. We’ve taken action at the full moon, and released all the old stuff. We want this receiving to be healthy and effective, something that enhances our wellbeing, whether spiritual, financial, romantic, or otherwise.
Now that we’re more open to receiving in this phase, we want to use discernment to ensure that our receiving is in alignment and makes us feel good. So it does not mean we open to any receiving, some of that may push on our boundaries, make us feel uncomfortable, or simply not be in alignment.
So we use discernment to ensure that what we are about to receive is life-enhancing and safe. And of course, receiving is most powerful when accompanied with gratitude.
Phase 7: Third Quarter Moon (Doing) - This is where we are today
The focus of this phase is giving back. We’ve now had a chance to receive, so our cups are now full! And again, it’s a time of discernment - does our giving back drain us or make us feel resentful? Or are we spiritually nourished from our giving back? You can give back at any time of the lunar cycle, but this phase is specifically a great time to do so.
Giving back can look like lending a helping hand to a friend or neighbor, volunteering, making a freebie for your website, or anything else that comes to you at that time.
And if you are feeling run down, feel free to take this phase and give back to yourself. There’s nothing wrong with needing that. And if you give to others, do it generously, wholeheartedly, and without any strings attached.
Phase 8 - Balsamic Moon (Being)
Back to a yin phase, we rest, restore, and reflect during this time. It’s a winding down phase. The moon is near the darkest it will be, opening back to the New Moon. This is a time of transformation, “death” (literal or figurative), and the opening up to a new cycle.
This is where we start to feel into if we want to continue last month’s New Moon intentions or start some completely new ones.
How to Use this Info In Your Life
This can be applied to your work, whether you work full-time, part-time, or as an entrepreneur. She suggests scheduling and saving the bigger work load for the yang days and having lighter days on yin. But this can be applied to any part of your life, the yin and yang are related to everything: social engagements, romance, friendship, spiritual practice, self-care, exercise, etc.
Wrap-Up
The moon is a beautiful anchor that is always there, always changing, and always inviting us to go inwards. The moon doesn’t “make” us do anything, but rather reflects back to us what is going on in our lives and where we can make the most of the changing times.
When we allow our bodies to be in sync with such a beautiful piece of nature, we are aligning with the pace that our lives ought to be. And there are always more moon cycles, which means there are always opportunities for more abundance, however you define it.
I hope you enjoyed this moon journey with me! Thank you so much for reading and supporting this newsletter 🙂 I really appreciate your following along!
Sending so many blessings!
Love,
Angeli
